Biały. W Polsce to czystość.

“Ja też” - With these two words I bonded with the young girl whose family had so graciously agreed to host me, an unknown foreigner, for two nights. Newly arrived in their home, she eyed me cautiously. Her mother and older sister had been speaking to me in English, and although she was learning the language herself, she seemed unsure about this disruption in the family routine.

One day in a simple class in 1980, I got a map book called “ATLAS”. On the first page is a list of countries complete with a picture of the flag. I see the two-color "red and white" flag that I recognize is the color of the Indonesian flag. I was shocked because the position was upside down and I read the word under it : "Polandia".

July 2017. I am walking around in the airport of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, trying to figure out where the Polish passengers are. That is not easy, as I do not really know what the Polish language sounds like… I hear some difficult words, with lots of consonants, so I take my chance, in English, as my Polish is unexisting. I am lucky, these are Polish people and so I have found my travelling companions!

Mój koleżanki z pracy i ja kochamy go. A on uczy się. On robi ogromne postępy.

Why, on earth, would a Greek woman with an Armenian Name ever learn Polish? As a teacher of English for the last 25 years, I have never had to explain my decision to learn English. In the last three years, though, I have had to explain why I decided to teach myself Polish in almost every discussion the topic has come up. In our hectic, technologically advanced era, our minds are geared towards the practical and we always want to find the purpose our actions would serve.

Szczecin, three o’clock in the morning. I reach out to turn off the alarm clock on my phone. It took me a while to find it in the pocket of my coat, the one I was wearing the previous night when we went out to Pinokio, a sacred party place for us, Erasmus students. We tell each other “Let’s go to Pinokio” as if we were about to go the grocer’s to get some eggs for breakfast the following morning.

Czekałam śmiało i cierpliwie przed drzwiami sali A-124.

Pewnego dnia znalazłam to, czego naprawdę potrzebowałam.

Gdzie matki i ojcowie, babcie i dziadkowie zachowywali pamięć o swojej wierze, o swoich tradycjach, o swoim języku i przekazali tę pamięć swoim dzieciom i wnukom .

I have been living in Podgórze. I can see Plac Bohaterów Getta (Ghetto Heroes Square, formerly ‘Plac Zgody’) from my window. This is where I walk everyday. The Empty Chairs memorial is located here. I have caught the number 24 tram from Plac Bahaterów Getta everyday to attend Polish class, just north of Stare Miasto (old city). At night time, the plac is dreary and ill lit. The memorial chairs are lit from below, and usually, the occasional person walking their dog will be hovering about. Sometimes I see the pizza delivery man walking back into the pizza shop, probably to pick up more pizzas.

Poland began for me as a place of horror. It was the land where my people experienced unspeakable treatment during the Shoah. I grew up hearing countless horror stories about Poland and Polish people from family members who had survived the war and swore never to return. My grandmother has rather infamously assured us all that she would not return, “for a million dollars”. I have never actually tested her resolve. For most of my life, this was what made sense to me; Poland as a place of horrors that must be avoided. Five years ago, this began to change.

Well, my Polish experience started when I was rather small, about 3 years old so I don’t quite remember what it was like to be in a foreign country. I went to school in Poland from 1st to 5th grades and I was feeling there like a native actually. I remember I couldn’t talk my native language, Armenian - I could hardly pronounce some words in it; thus, it is clear how “good” I could be at writing in Armenian while being in Poland, right?

50. That is the approximate number of times I have been to Poland. I wish I could remember the specifics of each trip, but it has been so many times they just blur together. However, I can tell you that I have been all over the country from Gdansk to Zakopane, from Bielsko to the Mazury, and everywhere in between. Except, Rzeszów. I used to see a lot of people at Luton Airport flying there, but I have never met anyone from there. In fact I have never heard anyone ever use Rzeszów in a sentence in English or Polish for that matter. Quite odd, really.

Polska i ja?

Jestem studentką polonistyki II roku z Chin. Dlaczego postanowiłam uczyć się języka polskiego? Bo w Chinach wielu ludzi woli uczyć się francuskiego, niemieckiego, hiszpańskiego i rosyjskiego, a ja wolę spróbować coś nowego i chcę poznać inną kulturę.

The school I attended was a good one but it only offered one main language, French. I was also in the sole Latin class. I was not taught to speak French conversationally (as my Mother had in the 1920s). Furthermore, my teacher was Canadian. I learned no accent. I wish now that Mother had taught me German but schoolwork was enough of a struggle. Latin proved immensely valuable as it was inflected. From whence I know not, but I became interested in Slavic writers and had the Army accepted me, I would have learned Russian. I joined the Navy.

My Polish grandfather Feliks happened to be working in the south of France when World War II broke out. That is why he ended up in Scotland over the war, with the Polish Liberation Army. There, he met my Guernsey grandmother Sylvia, who had been evacuated from the Channel Islands when the islands were occupied by the Germans. When the war was over, grandpa’s family told him not to come back to Poland, which is how my grandfather from a small village in Poland, Wohyń, ended up on a tiny British island near the coast of Normandy, as one of seven Polish war veterans on the island.

I do remember myself sitting in the kitchen when my father told to the family that he has to leave to Poland in order to work… my sister crying, sitting behind one of the sides of the kitchen’s table and mum doing the same, just opposite to little’s Patri. In that moment my mind disconnects from half a minute… and suddenly, without noticing it, my mouth let some words go out of it: I’ll go with you, Dad. Caitlin was serious and studious. Throughout her time at school she was most often to be seen hurrying between classes with a pile of dictionaries a mile high and an intent frown etched across her features. Poland is a place which for me conjures up much more than a country on the map. Indeed this has been the case for many Poles throughout history at times of strife when it was not named on the map and when borders shifted in seismic upheavals. For me, a child of Polish refugees raised in a faraway place called Australia among the Polish and rest of Eastern Europe Diaspora, where post war ‘new Australians’ laid foundations for a new life for themselves and their Australian children and left behind the chaos of post second world war Europe, Poland to me as a child in the relative security of my parents adopted homeland was a country of dreams and nightmares.

My mum says that when I have children one day, I won’t bring them up, but just carry on reading and let them get on with it themselves. When I am ten, I do not yet know how things will be. For today, I am engrossed in the imaginary world of a vicar’s daughter in Northumberland in the 1960’s. The book has a Polish character in it called Freddy. He seems to be the only outsider in the community and somewhat mistrusted. He behaves differently, looks different I guess. I don’t mean ‘Polonia’ in the nowoczesny sense of the builders and waitresses that could be found scraping a living in pre-EU London (or the doctors and media people doing very well there post-EU), but rather the national personification of Poland, that fabulous lady that Matejko portrayed so beautifully in his oil-on-canvas rendering of the tragic aftermath of the failed January 1863 Uprising.
